Georgia police take teacher into custody after shots fired at school

Police in Georgia have taken a high school teacher into custody after being called to an incident where they say he fired a gun in a classroom and then barricaded himself in.

The Dalton police department tweeted that no children were hurt or in danger during the incident, which lasted for about an hour on Wednesday and caused the school to be evacuated. They provided no information about the teacher’s identity or what caused the situation.

A police spokesman, Bruce Frazier, said the scene was secure. Students have been taken to the Northwest Georgia Center and officers are advising parents to go there to pick them up.

Dalton high school’s website says the school has 2,000 students.

Police confirmed at least one shot was fired during the incident, which took place over the course of about an hour.

The teacher apparently fired a gun inside a classroom and barricaded himself there for about 30 minutes before he was taken into custody.

Local TV station WRCB reported that no students were inside the classroom at the time. Frazier said the teacher apparently did not want to involve students. He said authorities have recovered a handgun.
